Enjoy a comfortable transport to the little town of Tivoli, new Rome. Tivoli and its Villas is a tantalizing comprehensive tour that will leave you astonished. You will meet your driver to travel to this small town located 43 kilometers (that’s 27 miles) from Rome, set in a splendid natural environment between the Eternal City and the high hills to the east. It is best known for hosting two UNESCO World Heritage sites. This is where Hadrian built his majestic villa back in the 2nd century AD: a luxury country residence where he used to retreat and where he lived his late years. The huge complex includes more than 30 buildings, several swimming pools, former thermal stations, and it covers an area larger than a square kilometer (0,386 square miles), which gives quite an idea of the purpose of the place: show the opulence and power of the emperor. In the 16th century, much of the remaining marble and statues were removed from Hadrian’s Villa by Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este. With those marbles he decorated his own villa located nearby: Villa d’Este, a UNESCO world heritage site. The villa interiors are largely frescoed, and a huge garden surrounds it, displaying a complex system of pools, water jets, channels, fountains, cascades, and water games. What makes this system of fountains such an incredible masterpiece of engineering is that it works entirely by the force of gravity, without pumps.
